So then... what's your solution to the guys who don't abide by these treaties? It would seem you do not support a military response to them. What's the answer?
Who said I didn't? Firstly, we have to get our own countries to respect international law. There's nothing worse than trying to sort out the rest of the world, when you haven't even looked to your own back yard. The treatment of those poor people in Guantanamo for all this time is a prime example.
But yes, political pressure against the Janjaweed, with an ultimatum with military intervention would be fine with me as long it was done in the right way. Of course, military intervention won't actually happen, since Britain and the U.S. tend to intervene when there's something else at stake for them -- Iraq, for example. When NATO does do something seemingly more benelovent, it's often for hidden reasons and executed horribly.
For example, Strobe Talbott came out and explicitly stated that the 1999 bombing of Serbia as a result of the breakup of ex-Yugoslavia, had nothing to do with the suffering of the Kosovar Albanians, but rather with Serbia's insubordination towards NATO. And how was it executed? With complete decimation of Serbia's essential infrastructure as a punishment for not carrying out the reforms NATO required of it.
I could go on and on. How about preventing the sales of our arms to these unstable groups and governments? East Timor cannot happen on the scale it does without Britain exporting weapons to Indonesia.
